What is a layer?

GIS Layers from noaaA map on MapsGeek and on other mapping systems is composed of different layers of information superimposed over each other.

Layers on MapsGeek

Basically, there are 2 types of layer on MapsGeek. The vector layers and the WMS layers. Only the vector layers can be modified on MapsGeek, WMS layers are just here for cosmetic purposes.

When looking for a layer, you can browse the public list of vector layers. Vector layers are shown with this icon and WMS layers with this symbol

You can add your own vector layers in this menu. It's pretty explicit. You can see the list of the supported vector formats below.

If you have uploaded a vector layer and didn't set it as public, it will be shown in this menu.

Use this menu to add a WMS layer. You can also browse already existing WMS Server and choose from their selection of layers.

List of the supported vector formats

MapsGeek uses the OGR Simple Feature Library for importing files. We've tested some but not all of the following formats, tell us if you encounter any problem with one of these formats.
