Draw your own layers !!!

Sat Aug 15, 2009 at 00:45

We launched today a brand new feature on MapsGeek: you can now draw your own layers! We're using Openlayers which works really well. The layers you create can then be used just like any other, you can even make them public so other users can use them or modify them as well. Have fun!

August new layers

Tue Aug 11, 2009 at 05:26

3 new very nice (and big) layers today. The 'Oceans and Seas', just so you can add the oceans and sea names on your maps and the 'Depth Contours' also for cosmetic purposes. The third one is the main 'Built Areas' of the world. All three layers come from biogeo.berkley.edu and can be found in the World folder under 'Add a layer'.

The Tutorial is online !

Confused with MapsGeek? Hmm, okay, here is the solution to get you started: our brand new detailed Step-by-step Tutorial complete with screen-shoots and everything!

Patterns for polygons

Fri Jul 31, 2009 at 20:30

Patterns

Today's new feature on MapsGeek can appear 'small': we've added the possibility to add patterns for polygons. So yes, it may seems small but by doing so, it now makes it way easier to map multiple variables on a single map!

Query your maps

Wed Jul 29, 2009 at 18:50

A new functionality is being tested right now. A new check box called info appeared on the map interface, when checked, your map becomes queryable.

The map is also queryable via the public interface, the information window can be moved, it's sometimes misplaced at startup but we're working on it.

You can give us feedback on the forum.

Upload your geometry

Wed Jul 22, 2009 at 17:48

On MapsGeek, as the representation of your data you have the choice between the layers already present on the website, use a WMS layer or upload your own geometry. So far you could only upload an ESRI Shapefile, well, this is over. We've extended the list of possible formats to most of the known GIS formats out there, including KML, MapInfo, TIGER and so on !

Setting the extent

Thu Jul 16, 2009 at 22:54

Set the extent

We know that setting the map extent is a bit painful with OpenLayers (that's the system we use) especially with the zoom factor set. Well, there's some improvement, you can now set the extent to a layer's extent. That sounds complicated but it's simpler than it sounds. Try it !

Cosmetics

Thu Jul 16, 2009 at 22:43

The new 'Show cosmetics' option in the map interface allow you add the cosmetic layer (title, legend, scalebar...) on the preview map. It makes it easier to view the final result.

Add a background

Wed Jul 15, 2009 at 20:30

We just added a feature to use an uploaded picture as a background for your maps. It's being tested right now, if there's too much abuse we'll turn it off.

We understand it's also a possible way to create the most ugly maps on the web but when used wisely it can actually be looking pretty good.

USA 5 Digits Zip Codes

Wed Jul 15, 2009 at 18:30

The layers of the US Zip codes are all online! They're under Country > North America > USA > 5 Digits Zip code and are grouped by States.

Regions Layer

Mon Jul 13, 2009 at 04:44

I just uploaded a big layer with all the regions of the world. By regions, I mean the first level administrative regions. That's the States for the USA, the Regions in France, the Departamientos in Bolivia and so on... The layer is too big to be used on the world scale but quite nice when zoomed down to a continent or a country.

The layer is located in the 'World' folder when you add a layer

.

And I'm nearly done uploading the US Zip codes !

US Zip Codes

Fri Jul 10, 2009 at 23:10

I saw that someone wanted to make a map based on the US Zip Codes. I'm slowly uploading them. That should be ready within 4/5 days (real life catching up this weekend). The codes are split by States, that should be highly sufficient but if someone needs a continental Zip codes layer please let me know in the forum. Hope this will help !

Help

Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 20:23

The help is online. It's building slowly but it's actually already very helpful to understand our map interface.

Scale bar

Tue Jun 30, 2009 at 20:07

You can now add scale bars to your map. It's pretty basic right now and set to kilometers, more options will follow.
