The number of births to females ages 15-17 per 1,000 females for that age group on a town or county. The rate is calculated by dividing the number of females 15 through 17 years old who gave birth by the total number of females in that age group in a town or county and multiplying by 1,000. The total number of females 15 through 17 years old is estimated by applying the 2000 Census proportions to the population estimates from the Connecticut Department of Public Health for those years. The birth rate of 18-19 year-old girls in not reported because the number of females in this age group is skewed in towns with colleges. Similarly, births to females under age 15 have been excluded because there are very few for this group (about 60 per year). This inclusion of females under 15 in the denominator would dramatically lower the rate, giving an underestimate of the risk for births to teenagers.

The poverty level represents the number of families per 100 families with at least one children under 18.

Every time the script page is called, the data featured on the map are updated.

Today's new feature on MapsGeek can appear 'small': we've added the possibility to add patterns for polygons.

3 new very nice (and big) layers today. The 'Oceans and Seas', just so you can add the oceans and sea names on your maps and the 'Depth Contours' also for cosmetic purposes. The third one is the main 'Built Areas' of the world. All three layers come from biogeo.berkley.edu and can be found in the World folder under 'Add a layer'.

We're using Openlayers which works really well. The layers you create can then be used just like any other, you can even make them public so other users can use them or modify them as well. Have fun!

On MapsGeek, as the representation of your data you have the choice between the layers already present on the website, use a WMS layer or upload your own geometry. So far you could only upload an ESRI Shapefile, well, this is over. We've extended the list of possible formats to most of the known GIS formats out there, including KML, MapInfo, TIGER and so on !

A new functionality is being tested right now. A new check box called info appeared on the map interface, when checked, your map becomes queryable.

The map is also queryable via the public interface, the information window can be moved, it's sometimes misplaced at startup but we're working on it.

You can give us feedback on the forum.

We understand it's also a possible way to create the most ugly maps on the web but when used wisely it can actually be looking pretty good.

I saw that someone wanted to make a map based on the US Zip Codes. I'm slowly uploading them. That should be ready within 4/5 days (real life catching up this weekend). The codes are split by States, that should be highly sufficient but if someone needs a continental Zip codes layer please let me know in the forum. Hope this will help !

I just uploaded a big layer with all the regions of the world. By regions, I mean the first level administrative regions. That's the States for the USA, the Regions in France, the Departamientos in Bolivia and so on... The layer is too big to be used on the world scale but quite nice when zoomed down to a continent or a country.

The layer is located in the 'World' folder when you add a layer
.

And I'm nearly done uploading the US Zip codes !

There's a new data analysis tool on MapsGeek. The tool gives you all the display options for a layer, adds new classification methods and new symbolization. You can access the data analysis tool by adding data to a layer and selecting the 'Create class' button.

We just launched a great game on MapsGeek! It's pretty simple to understand, a bit harder to play. All you have to do is locate the most countries in 2 minutes. Sounds simple? Yeah, well the game keeps the highest scores so we'll see about that...

There are new map games online. You can test your knowledge on the world's country but also on US States, French Departements and the Seas and Oceans of the World. Good luck !

A grand new feature on MapsGeek today: the live mapping. In two words, the live mapping allow you to include the data to be mapped directly into the url used to call the map from your website! This allow data present on your website to be mapped live! Have a look at our example. Live mapping is available for everyone from the map interface for all geometrical layers.
